New Bike?!!

I recently let go of my first bike! A bike that never let me down despite being second hand. A bike I dearly cared for and treated like a child. Some may say that I have given up on my hobby, others may say that married life has influenced this decision. However, the truth is, I needed a bigger bike and hence the search began.

The Bike
Budget: Ksh. Friendly (incl. of shipping and custom fees)
New/Used: New
Local/Import: Either
Suspension: Hardtail
Frame: Large/Extra Large
Wheels: 29er

Looking at my guidelines, seems easy? Wrong!!!

I went online and the choices are insanely numerous. Luckily, prices on different websites for the same bike remained constant. Great relief! And with specs remaining fairly constant I roped in my wife to help with selection and her choices were based purely on aesthetics. I don’t blame her and we agreed that the Mondraker Phase S 29 2018 was absolutely gorgeous! The other bikes are on the list for audit purposes *sic*

Target Bikes: in order of preference
1.      MondrakerPhase S 29 2018
2.      CubeAttention 2018
3.      Saracen Mantra Pro2018
4.      Mondraker Phase 292018

Websites

·         evanscycles.com
·         biketart.com

The main detail I was focused on was how the bike would be packaged for shipping. Most of the websites would not ship to Kenya and the one that would, warned of customs fees. This fees can be exorbitant! I know of someone whose fees exceeded the price of the item bought!!

The plan: buy a boxed bike, to be assembled in Kenya and use a shipping company that takes care of all fees that may be incurred.

Research: got in touch with some of the websites and got box dimensions. The main take away was that my preferred bike has one of the biggest frames in the industry. Spoke to logistics companies and their fees were based solely on weight and not box dimensions (phew!!!) but I still want to see their quotes!

Check Mondraker bikes out and help me get their attention and see of what assistance they may be...

Suggestions for other bikes to consider are welcome, as are suggestions on how to get the bike to Nairobi.

  1. Hello, you got any assistance on importation, and how to cut cost?

  2. Hi Dennis, I got lucky and got a very good bike locally. My advice would be talk to guys who import many bikes like Britken Bikes. Online Platforms like VituMob and Savo Store can import but their costs will be a bit on the higher side. This is due to the shape of the bike that requires on most occasions for them to use volumetric weight to charge shipping. I hope this helps.
